Paper bag cheese (paper bag challenge from Tinkerlab)

Paper Bag Cheese FinishedI’ve been thinking for 2 weeks about this challenge, I wanted something new that Nico could help with making and play with when done. Finally the night before the launch of the challenge I asked my mother because I was stumped. She gave me the same ideas I had thought of and didn’t wanna do. Then she came up with a cheese! Nico has a little plush mouse called “EE” so I thought it would be great since she likes cheese lol.

Paper Bag Cheese Mouse RadioMy mother got the idea from a radio she had bought my little cousin back in the 80′s and now found one for Nico. It’s a mouse sitting on a piece of cheese (the radio) and her mouth moves to match the sounds coming out. So I thought cool, I can make a Swiss cheese with a hole and he can play with “EE” making her go through the hole.  I explained to him what we were doing and he was very excited all day about it, but I only finished it when he went to bed.

Paper Bag Cheese PaintingHis only part in this was the painting of the bag and cardboard to make the hole in the cheese.

Paper Bag Cheese HoleI would have used a tp roll but “EE” is not that small so she didn’t fit through one. I used a white cardboard he painted yellow instead, after I thought about yellow construction paper, which would have worked fine too, but he wouldn’t have been able to help. I positioned the hole fairly centered so it wouldn’t make the structure weak because it’s a fairly big hole. If you have a smaller mouse you should be able to use tp rolls and make 2 holes.

Paper Bag Cheese StarburstI made the tunnel part of the hole with the cardboard, then I flattened the bag and did a sunburst from the inside of the tunnel. I used a pencil so I could erase it after. I took a utility knife and cut along the lines both sides of the bag at the same time.

Paper Bag Cheese SunburstThen I put the tunnel inside and glued the sunburst in it, therefore making the edge smooth for him not to paper cut himself playing.

Paper Bag Cheese BattingI then filled the bag with batting the best I could.

Paper Bag Cheese SlitThe ending was tricky, I had to cut a slit on the sides where the bag folds in and overlap it so it wouldn’t cave in too much.

Paper Bag Cheese StapleI folded the edge a little tiny bit and stapled it together, did some paint touch up at the end…

Paper Bag Cheese Finished

…and voilà!

If you do this, we’d LOVE to see a photo of it. Email it to us or post it on our Facebook page. We’d love to do a Facebook album, a Pinterest board and a page of your creations :)

The toilet paper rolls would work well for those little mice and you could even make 2 holes for more going through the hole fun. Don’t forget to take photos and share back if you make one :)
