A blogging friend of mine has this wonderful project called “Small Hands Creating Hope”. Here is a little bit of her story: “This May, I celebrate 30 years since I was diagnosed with cancer (at 22 months), and I wanted to do something special to mark the occasion. My story is what I would like all cancer stories to be, someday – one of hope and a happy future. I decided to put together a book symbolizing hope, with a cancer-related theme. Children’s art projects seemed the perfect medium, and I was fortunate enough to get the support of some fantastic bloggers – and their kids! The book will go live starting May 14th (the day I was admitted for surgery, 30 years ago), with ebook downloads as thank yous for donations to the American Cancer Society through July 4th (when I turn 32 – plus, I like the liberation symbolism of the date!)” MaryAnne from mamasmiles.com
So we teamed up with a group of other amazing bloggers to help this project become a unique collection of arts and crafts that can easily be reproduced for someone facing cancer, which has been compiled into an ebook that will be available to everybody, who donates at least $15 to the American Cancer Society. Once we have received your donation, you will receive an email with the download link and on top of this you will also receive a second link where you can purchase the hardcopy version at production cost! If you donate and for some reason do not receive the email(s) or are experiencing problems with the downloads, please send a quick email to smallhandsproject at gmail dot com, so you can be helped.
So of course I offered to do something with Nico, even though Nico is too young to understand the why, he does enjoy helping others and making people happy, so it’s right up his alley. A few things MamaSmiles asked for her project, where the colors purple & yellow and symbols of hope like sun/light, rainbows and butterflies. Since we visited the butterfly house last year, Nico loves butterflies so it was only natural to make one He loves using his rainbow paint and painting coffee filters, so I had him paint a yellow and a purple one.
First he did and orange and a rainbow one, lucky me that way I could try out how to turn it into a butterfly I took the orange and rainbow butterfly and folded them accordion style and pinched it in the middle like a bow tie. I held both together and took a folded in half pipe cleaner and twisted a bit of the bottom wrapped some around, and took the left over after a couple of twist and made antennas. By looking at the pic, it’s easier to understand, I promise!
To make this project a little more “glittering” for the purple and yellow one, I had Nico use glue stick and sprinkle some yellow and purple glitter all over, then I did the same as the other one. Tip: Apply the glue very fast and sprinkle before it dries, since Nico doesn’t work quite fast enough I had to re-apply the glue so the glitter would stick.
