Australia – D is for Down Under – Book review

“D is for Down Under” – Devin Scillian (Author) and Geoff Cook (Illustrations)

For the fourth time now our journey around the world as part of our “Around the World in 12 Dishes” challenge is being accompanied by one of the books by our generous partners at Sleeping Bear Press (and no, this is still not a sponsored post!), titled “D is for Down Under”. As part of the same series of country alphabets, it is following down the same path as “D is for Dala Horse” about the Nordic Countries, “T is for Taj Mahal” for India and “K is for Kabuki” for Japan, taking each letter of the alphabet and picking subject related to, in this case, Australia.

It is about 10×10 inches in size, which helps the drawings illustrate the very interesting content, which once more has a little two- to four-line poem related to the respective drawing and for some letters also some more facts, so your child can actually grow with this book, since you can start with the images and the poems (like in our case), and then as time progresses to the additional information, bringing some interesting and at times unknown facts about Australia to the surface, which even as an adult is very interesting.

With the style of the illustrations, it is very different from the other books so far and at times seems more cartoon style, which I am not sure if it is typically Australian. At first it seemed a bit off, but the more I read the book, the more it worked for me. The book shows the different aspects of the Australian culture, from the Aboriginals over animals to the modern lifestyle of “down under”.

“D is for Down Under” once more is a great book to discover and explore Australia and it doesn’t matter which age group the reader is, all of them will find interesting stuff that they had not known before and thanks to the illustrations is a multi-sensory experience that everybody will enjoy.

A big thank you again goes out to Sleeping Bear Press, not just for a review copy of this book, but also a giveaway copy! This giveaway is open to readers worldwide, no matter where you are, we will not restrict the participation, all you have to do is enter through the Rafflecopter below and cross your fingers that you will be the lucky winner!

Alex is is taking most of the photos (which is why you don’t see much of him) and from time to time he will also post about some of the activities that he’s been a part of. He also acts as editor for posts, technical troubleshooter and messes around with the WordPress behind-the-scenes stuff. Other than spending time with Nico and Valerie, he enjoys Heavy Metal, writing reviews about it, football (the European kind, the one here in North America he calls “handegg”) and trying out new twists on food.
