Australia – Dot art paper plate turtle

This month “Around the World in 12 Dishes” Is going down under. Food wise all was good but craft wise I was totally uninspired, so I asked the group of mommy bloggers I’m part of and they came up with TONS of ideas. One that stuck with me was the Aboriginal dot art, because Nico loves to paint. Obviously at almost 3, I didn’t expect him to produce the same kind of art but we took our inspiration from it :)
My original idea you can find here, but while looking for materials for it I saw a paper plate and got this one. I got paint dot dabbers on our first trip to the US this year when we visited MamaSmiles and he loves them so I figured that would be great to make the dots.

I free handed the legs, fins, tail and head. I used the natural inner circle of the plate for the shell.

I traced it for you if you’d like a pattern :)

He got up from his nap and we got dotting! He even showed Dada (grandma) how to dot, lol. We talked about how people living in Australia, where the kangaroos and koalas come from, often paint like that, with dots. They will fill whole pictures of little dots, but to make it easier and because our picture is big we are doing bigger dots.

He really liked it, and of course he wanted to add glitter glue so after it was dried we added some :)

We also added little googly eyes, cause she needs eyes to see.

Thanks to the ladies from the following blogs for inspiration:

Valerie is the creative mind behind "Glittering Muffins", stay-at-home mom of Nico, a little dynamo that is bursting with energy. He also is the inspiration behind the blog (and the name) with his keen interest in cooking, baking and, well, glitter. Valerie constantly is thinking about twists to the traditional arts, crafts and recipes to make them her own and is inspiring others while doing so. Outside of the blogging world, her main activity is Nico, with the occasional TV show (non-toddler related) and casual game here and there.
