Since our French bread was such a big success, our second attempt at a French recipe turned out to be a very tasty, although very difficult dish to type (a big THANK YOU to whoever invented copy and paste!) – Boeuf Bourguignon.

For a long time now Nico has been a big fan of almost anything soup and stew, so a beef stew sounded right up his alley and the recipe we found over at Delish.com looked easy enough to adapt to what we like and had at home. Unfortunately Nico could not really help much with the early parts of the recipe, but he would come and join in the fun a little later on.

First off I cut the beef cubes in smaller parts (perfect for a little mouth to eat without anyone having to cut or him to bite), the carrots and the onion to have it all ready for Nico’s grand entrance. I browned the beef in our wok, and browning is relative, since the beef let so much water that it almost stewed itself…

But after removing it from the wok, there were some nice drippings left and if you can pour and stir, Nico will be there to help, so he dumped the carrots and onions, helped with getting the garlic out of the little frozen cube and stirred it all up well.

Next up were the flour, the tomato paste (which proved to be very reluctant to exit its measuring spoon), salt and pepper and Nico was able to stir a little more before pouring the beef stock (an excellent replacement for the wine that the original recipe calls for) and stirring the whole mix more.

Once that was ready and all little bits and pieces that were stuck to the bottom of the wok were loose, we remembered another ingredient that we had forgotten – mushrooms. Here Nico was able to help by twisting the stems off the caps and then he helped with cutting them, but he wanted to keep one cap, since it was “his best friend” (does it show he did not go out much of late?), which has been happily shriveling on his table since. So we put the beef mix into an oven safe dish, sprinkled the mushroom quarters over it, then added the sauce, found that it was not enough and added an extra cup of beef stock to make sure everything would stay moist and not dry out.

After cooking away for a bit more than an hour covered by aluminum foil, we added the frozen peas, re-covered it and let it cook for about 20 more minutes until everything was nice and tender. The whole house smelled wonderful like the stew and we could hardly wait for it to be done.

We still had some leftover mashed potatoes from our first Finnish dish that we had done just prior to our Boeuf Bourguignon, so we scooped some of it into a plate and the stew on top of it.

Nico played the Diva card again, refusing to even try one bite, but we thoroughly enjoyed it, because it has this nice and full flavour, it was just lacking a bit of moisture in the sauce department, so a mental note for next time is to add an extra cup stock to it.

Nico wanted his own and played with ours before I could even put any paper on it!

Nico then helped with paper transport, for me to start my hen.

Surprising to me Alex had never used flour/water glue! So I had to teach him how (less messy adult version, with a paint brush) but it was so painfully slow to watch I did his too. I also filled them with batting to avoid caving in from the wetness of the glue.

After Nico helped me to paint my first coat, I spray painted mine to avoid having to do 5 coats or more of craft acrylic white paint and I did the dots with a q-tip.

I decided on a Calgary hen since we are moving there and I gave her a cowboy look to match the famous Calgary Stampede!

Alex went with his favorite music, Heavy Metal (not played in the house) and I gotta say accessories for that style are really hard to find!

 Nico had a special request for his, he wanted it “petit” like a baby chick but as a hen like ours. So we set the pattern to half size and I made it for him. I found a small white glue bottle that was unpacked and mixed some of it to water and did the same I had done for ours, which was less lumpy and easier than the flour/water glue.

After much talk as to what theme he wanted and looots of mind changing, he settled on a firemen themed hen. Since I was limited in craft supplies, we resorted to stickers which he liked anyways

All we need from you is an email with what you thought of the place(s) and here is some basic information that would be helpful if included in your post:

• What the kids liked the most/least (if child is old enough)
• Price of food (a round about like, if it’s more around 5$ for a burger or 10$), any healthy food or bring your own food options
• Extra activities not necessarily related to the original outing but there as a bonus, like water play area (to know bring swim suit)
• The place website (for price, food availability, transit, directions, parking, bathrooms/changing accessories, indoors/outdoors, gift shop, indoor/outdoor/safety)
• If the place closes for some time during the year (not always mentioned on site)
• Easy parking and pricing if not free
• Any age restrictions/range
• Out of personal experience: Was it clean, was there shade, was it crowded the day you went? Were portion sizes and food good? Were there any wait times for anything?

You can work them in your story or make a list, it is up to you

He learned that he had to put them on straight or it would fall, which at first he was rather unhappy about but eventually he remembered how much fun it was to knock it down and it was all good again. He also learned about the Pisa tower which he called pizza, he asked what it was, I told him a real tower in Italy that leans but doesn’t fall, he thought it was cool. Wanting to build higher he even got the step ladder.
He also made sure the construction zone was secure and well indicated
He also grouped them, made little walls and he learned that towers stay up higher if you lean them against the wall!

You wonder why I let him do it? Well, he’s having fun, learning, building and in terms of blocks they are the softest out there, no? It also technically cost me nothing since I needed some anyways.
