France – Boeuf Bourguignon
Since our French bread was such a big success, our second attempt at a French recipe turned out to be a very tasty, although very difficult dish to type (a big THANK YOU to whoever invented copy and paste!) – Boeuf Bourguignon. For a long time now Nico has been a big fan of almost anything soup and stew, so a beef stew sounded right up his alley and the recipe we found over at Delish.com … Read entire article »

Ireland – Irish Chicken Stew
Ireland’s cuisine seems to be such a good match for us, since on top of the soda bread we found more highly interesting things, such as Irish Chicken and Dumplings, recipe to be found on Allrecipes again. There original recipe calls for a baking mix to make the dumplings, since we had not idea what that mix was and probably only is available in the US anyway, we decided to scrap the dumplings, since the … Read entire article »

Rice meatballs in tomato soup
(Made March 3, 2013) This is a recipe my mother made when I was little and I continued with it. Nico likes them with a minimum of sauce (mister anti-sauce, lol), I like them because they are simple to make and the prep time is only 10-15 mins, perfect when you have kids. You can make bigger batches and keep in the fridge for quick lunches or dinners for a week. We put the rice and … Read entire article »

Austria – Wiener Schnitzel
To conclude our first year of “Around the World in 12 Dishes”, we are traveling to Austria, a country very close to my heart, since I grew up right on the border to it, so this feels a bit like a quick trip home. At the same time it obviously is also the country on our travels that I feel the most comfortable with, since I’ve been to it countless times (that you have to … Read entire article »

Chinese style meatballs and spaghetti
(Feb10, 2013) This is another favorite of Nico’s after vegetable soup rice (it’s not a soup, but a creamy rice). He LOVES pasta and rice, those are his 2 favorite things to eat, he could have them every day! He doesn’t eat regular spaghetti sauce anymore but he will eat meat and sometimes likes it with soy sauce. He also seems to like creamy sauces or sauces like honey garlic or teriyaki. Anyways, my mother … Read entire article »

Pancake day 2013 (pancake sandwich)
(Feb 12, 2013) This year we celebrated Pancake Day at dinner time. Nico helped making the pancakes as usual and he opted for the chocolate chips with cinnamon sugar pizza pancake (cut like a pizza). The bottom corner photo is him holding the chocolate chips jar with his feet to finally get in! We, on the other hand, decided to make a sandwich with ours (see the picture on top), you can put what you’d like, here … Read entire article »

Great grandma’s lasagna
Disclaimer 1: Before I reveal the recipe, I must say I got lots of protest from my mother about this one since the recipe is from her grand mother Marie-Laure. We came to the understanding that I wouldn’t give the meat sauce recipe made from scratch but the rest only. So I hope it turns out as good for you with your own meat sauce. Disclaimer 2: This lasagna is NOT for vegetarians (sorry!) (Made December 27) … Read entire article »

Chicken stew
(Made Dec. 24th, 2012) This is a recipe I have adapted from my home economics class back in school (won’t tell you what year that was, lol) , theirs was rather greasy and complicated to do, so I simplified it. While the in laws were visiting they had asked if I could make it, since I used to make it over in Germany too. We did most prep while Nico was napping so it would … Read entire article »

Greece – Spetsofai
As usual we did quite some research for our Greek dish and came across a kind of stew, listening to the name of Spetsofai on a site that surprisingly is called “The Greek Food” (clever, isn’t it?). We like stews and soups and the likes and the ingredients were simple enough – pork sausage (which Nico eats…potentially), green peppers (which Nico eats…when he wants to), onions (that Nico eats…sometimes) and crushed tomatoes (which Nico probably would … Read entire article »

Shepherd’s pie Quebec style (Pâté chinois)
Disclaimer: This is not your typical British Shepherd’s pie, but it’s the closest translation I can find, so to all British readers out there please don’t be offended by the way we make it. (Made on December 18, 2012) Nico doesn’t eat this as he’s currently anti-mashed potatoes but eats cubed ones, he also only likes whole corn kernels not the creamy kind but he does like ground beef. So for now I keep a few … Read entire article »
